Chemical, Biological, and Physical Education Department

The issues of methodology of nature studies were being studied since the first years of the Institute functioning: at first, in the Department of Social Upbringing, and then, in the section of general methodology, the Department of the Methodology of Nature Studies. In 1944, a Department of the Methodology of Nature Studies and Chemistry was founded. In 1960, it was divided into two independent sectors: the sector of the methodology of Biology and the sector of the methodology of Chemistry. In different periods, it was chaired by F. L. Lesyk, I. K. Shl’ha, E. V. Shukhova, L. H. Kozetova (Biology) and O. I. Astakhov, H. M. Nikolaeva, A. Yu. Khrupalo, Ye. B. Bochkovskyi (Chemistry). The staff of these sectors developed a range of methodical handbooks about the effectiveness of teaching Biology and Chemistry, ways of control of the pupils knowledge, the methodology of the chemical and biological experiment, a textbook of Chemistry for the 7th-8th grades (O. I. Astakhov, S. Ya. Raskin, O. M. Rusko, 1960).

From 1979 till 1994, the sector (the Laboratory) of the methodology of biology and chemistry was chaired by N. M. Burynska. In this period the issues of the further improvement of the biology school course were investigated (E. V. Shukhova, O. M. Astanina, S. M. Vyhovskyi, L.P. Lavrukh, H. Y. Chudovska), the methodical basis of the realization of the polytechnic principle of teaching Chemistry (N. M. Burynska), the methodology of studying the theory of the structure of the organosilicon compounds (L. P. Velychko), the elements of material studies in the Chemistry course (L. A. Lypova), the methodology of the pupils independent work (I. I. Bazelyuk) were developed. N. M. Burynska prepared a textbook of the methodology of teaching Chemistry for the students of Natural Studies faculties of the pedagogical institutes (1987).

In 1990-s, the researches which are linked to the studying differentiation, the development of the content of the biological and chemical education were of special importance. In the Laboratory, a concept was the continuous chemical education in Ukraine was worked out; the content and the structure of the courses of Chemistry and Biology (the 8th-11th grades) for a public comprehensive school, specialized grades of the chemical and the biological specialties were scientifically based; the corresponding educational programs were created.

In the middle of 1990-s, the development of the state educational standard of Chemistry and Biology started. Moreover, the scientific and the methodological provisions of the concepts of the school chemical and biological education were worked out. The applied issues were of considerable importance in the researches; they were the development of the scientifically-based educational plans for the nature studies, mathematics, and polytechnic vocational schools, the field-specific classes of the chemical and biological, the chemical and technologies, the agricultural and chemical specialization; split-level chemistry and biology programs, courses, laboratory courses, optional courses for the specialized and field-specific grades of a public school as well as lyceums, colleges, and other educational institutions of a new type; the scientific-based recommendations aimed at the improvement of the effectiveness of the pedagogue work of the teachers, the further approach of pedagogy and school practice.

In accordance with the research results of this period, a collective monograph The Methodology of Teaching the School Chemistry Course / N. M. Burynska, L. P. Velychko, L. A. Lypova, N. I. Lukashova, N. N. Chaychenko, 1991/; an educational guidebook for the pupils of the 8-11th grades of the schools of all types Practical Works in Chemistry / I. I. Bazelyuk, N. M. Burynska, L. P. Velychko, L. A. Lypova, 1991 /; A Laboratory-Based Practicum for the Biology Specialized Schools / E. V. Shukhova, 1992.

In this period of time, the first homeland textbooks of Chemistry (H. M. Burynska, L. P. Velychko) and anthropobiology (N. Yu. Matyash, in co-authorship) were published. The textbooks received a state approval and were implemented in the educational process.

The educational-methodological series of Chemistry for the 8th-11th grades (textbooks, a guidebook for the practical work, didactic materials, tests collections, a reference book) was honored with the first Premium of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences in 1999.

During 2000-2002, in the Laboratory, the didactic provision of the State standard of the school biological and chemical education was developed. The staff worked out the draft concepts of the school chemical and biological education with 12 years of studying, the criteria of the evaluation of the studying achievements of pupils in Chemistry, Biology, Nature studies, the guidebooks for the teachers in the methodology of teaching Chemistry in the 8th-9th grades (N. M. Burynska) and biology of animals (E. V. Shukhova), state final attestation in Chemistry (N. Yu. Matyash, in a co-authorship). A range of scientific lay-outs covers the methodology of teaching organic chemistry (L. P. Velychko), the fundamentals of general chemistry (I. I. Bazelyuk), a test form of the control and the evaluation of of the pupils knowledge, the holding of the attestation in Chemistry (N. V. Tytarenko).

In 2003, the scientific-methodological basis of the selection and the realization of the content of the biological and chemical education in the secondary school was investigated. The concept fundamentals of the selection of content were worked out; and, on their basis, new educational Chemistry (L. P. Velychko, in a co-authorship) and Antropobiology (N. Yu Matyash) programs for a school of 12 years of studying (the standard level) were published. New concepts of textbooks were suggested, and the following textbooks were published: Organic Chemistry-10-11 for a field-specified studying of a subject (L. P. Velychko), Chemistry-7 (N. M. Burynska), Nature Studies-5 (T. V. Korshevnyuk, in a co-authorship). The System of Chemistry Tests (N. V. Tytarenko) was scientifically-based, the pedagogical requirements of the pupils experiment with the elements of general chemistry (H. A. Lashevska) were defined. The methodology of the control and the evaluation of the Biology studying achievements of the pupils of the 6th-7th grades (E. V. Shukhova).

The research of the methodical fundamentals of the field-specific teaching of Biology and Chemistry in the comprehensive educational institutions which was being made in 2007-2009 was a logical continuation of a work which had been performed by the Laboratory in the previous years when the content of the chemical and the biological education of a secondary school was developed. The Laboratory staff took part in the development of educational programs and textbooks for a field-specific school; they became the winners of the State competition of textbooks (N. M. Burynska, L. P. Velychko, H. V. Korshnevnyuk, H. A. Lashevska, N. Yu. Matyash).

In 2010, in the Laboratory, the research of two topics: The Methodic System of Teaching Chemistry in a High School at the Academic Level and The Methodic System of Teaching Biology in a High School at the Academic Level were started.

Because of the restitution of 11 years of studying, there was a need of working out a new edition of educational standards, the Biology and Chemistry educational programs. The Laboratory staff is the co-authors of these lay-outs.

The Laboratory scientists take part in the international investigations of the quality evaluation of the natural studies mathematics education, the scientific and methodological provision of the independent external testing in Biology and Chemistry.

In the recent years, in the Laboratory, the handbooks of Chemistry and Biology are actively developed on electronic media.
