Mathematical and Informatical Education Department

The Laboratory of Mathematical and Physical Education is one of the leading scientific sections of the Institute of Pedagogy of the National Academy of Pedagogical sciences of Ukraine. Its staff investigates the theoretical and the practical issues of teaching mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy in the comprehensive educational institutions. In particularly, they include the explanation of the structure and the content of teaching Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy, the creation of the educational and methodological handbooks, computer means for the courses of Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy, as well as the methodology of using these means in the educational process, and so on.

The problems of the theory and the methodology of teaching Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy were investigated in the Ukrainian Scientific-Research Institute of Pedagogy from the first years of its functioning. In the sector of the methodology of teaching Mathematics and Draftsmanship and the sector of Physics and Astronomy, such outstanding Methodists as the professors O. M. Astryab, M. I. Burda, O. S. Smohorzevs’kyi, I. F. Teslenko, I. Ye. Shymanskyi, the authors of textbooks, educational and methodical handbooks of Mathematics, M. B. Helfand, O. S. Dubynchuk, D. M. Mayyerhoyz, Yu. I. Malovanyi, E. Ya. Remez, famous physicians, professors, H. H. De-Meyts, O. S. Slyesarevskyi, A. A. Shylovskyi, O. K. Babenko, L. I. Leushchenko, R. D. Ponomaryov, M. Y. Rozenberg, O. I. Buhayov, S. U. Honcharenko, O. I. Lyashenko, worked in different periods of its functioning. In virtue of these scientists, the Ukrainian schools of methodologists of Mathematics and Physics which were famous for their works abroad were created.

During the 70-s of the XX century, the staff of the sector of the methodology of teaching Mathematics and Draftsmanship, M. I. Burda, M. B. Helfand, O. S. Dubynchuk, N. D. Matsko, I. F. Teslenko, T. M. Khmara, was working out the scientific fundamentals of the methodology of teaching Mathematics, the formation of the mathematical terms, created the methodological handbooks for the teachers of Mathematics, organizing a large-scale experimental check of new programs and textbooks because of the reform of the secondary school education. The improvement of the scientific level of teaching Mathematics was caused by the content and the structure of the school courses of mathematics, the methodology of the formation of the scientific outlook, pupils brain building as well as their ability to solve the mathematical tasks which were created by I. F. Teslenko, the Professor. The issues of the improvement of the methods of teaching Mathematics (O. S. Dubynchuk), the studying of the algebraic terms at schools (M. B. Helfand, T. M. Khmara), the development of the pupils spatial perception (N. D. Matsko), the formation of the abilities to solve the geometrical tasks (M. I. Burda) were widely researched.

In the abovementioned period, the scientists of the sector of the methodology of Physics and Astronomy, O. I. Buhayov, C. U. Honcharenko, D. Ya. Kostyukevych, O. I. Lyashenko, H. V. Samconova, Z. V. Sychevska, worked out the theoretical basis of the methodology of teaching Physics at a comprehensive school, checked the educational content experimentally, investigated a perspective problem of a programmed education which became more than topical because of the appearance of the modern educational means.

In 1980-s, the tendencies of the development of the Physics teaching process at a comprehensive secondary school (O. I. Buhayov), the structure and the content of the Mathematics and Physics lessons at a secondary school, the methods, the procedures, the organizational forms and the educational means (O. I. Buhayov, M. I. Burda), the types and the kinds of lessons (L. A. Zakota, O. I. Lyashenko, N. D. Matsko, H. V. Samsonova, T. M. Khmara) were being all-inclusively investigated.

During 1990-s, in the Laboratory, the important studies on the problems of the formation of the pupils outlook (S. U. Honcharenko), the unity of the theoretical and the empirical basis in teaching Physics (O. I. Lyashenko), the integration of the basis Physics course with the astronomy course (O. I. Buhayob, M. Y. Martynyuk) were made; the drafts of the school education standards were developed; there, for the first time, the tasks were concisely worded; the content and the structure of the basic Mathematics and Physics courses were determined; the fundamentals of the continuity of the mathematical and Physical education were laid (O. I. Buhayov, M. I. Burda). In the same period, in the Laboratory, the first Ukrainian fundamental study on the problems of the differentiation of teaching Mathematics and Physics as well as its scientific-methodological provision was started. The split-level educational programs for the schools and classes of different types (O. I. Buhayov, D. Ya. Kostyukevych, M. I. Burda, L. A. Zakota, T. M. Khmara) were developed; the experimental school textbooks were created (O. I. Buhayov, M. I. Burda, Yu. I. Malyovanyi, N. D. Matsko, T. M. Khmara); the recommendations about the implementation of the level and specialty differentiation were prepared.

In the recent years (2001-2011), the academic activity of the Laboratory staff was directed at the theoretical explanation, working out and the experimental check of the structure and content effectiveness, the methods, the organizational forms, and the means of the differentiated teaching of Physics and Mathematics at a secondary school as well as the corresponding scientific and methodological provision. The results of the conducted studies were demonstrated in the following working-outs of the academic staff: 9 educational programs, 22 textbooks for the comprehensive educational institutions; 28 educational handbooks; 28 methodological handbooks.

At the modern stage of the work of the Laboratory of Mathematical and Physical education, the problems which are connected to the implementation of the competence model of teaching Mathematics and Physics in a secondary school are being investigated. The research themes deal with the issues of new goals in the pedagogical process, the determination of the study results by means of the key and the subject competences of the pupil, the updating of the structure, the content, the methods and the forms of studying, the evaluation of the pupils studying achievements, the scientific and the methodological provision of the educational process. The results of the conducted research have already been demonstrated in the State standard of the basic and the full secondary education, the educational programs in Mathematics and Physics for a secondary school; they were included in the working-outs of the Laboratory staff.

Nowadays, the important scientific and methodological problems are solved by the Laboratory of Mathematical and Physical Education which combines the experience of high-qualified professionals and the eagerness of young scientists.

Artificially of June, 2013, 8 researchers work in the staff of the Laboratory:

Khmara Tamara Mykolaivna - a leading researcher of the Laboratory, a Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, a senior researcher;

Matsko Natalia Denysivna - a senior researcher of the Laboratory, a Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, a senior researcher;

Koval Volodymyr Serhiyovych a researcher of the Laboratory;

Voloshena Viktoria Viktorivna a junior research assistant;

Zasyekin Dmytro Olexandrovych a junior research assistant;

Sipiy Volodymyr Volodymyrovych a junior research assistant.
